Vashon HouseHold Website Redesign
Vashon Household (VHH) is a grassroots community organization formed in 1989. Its mission is to develop and steward affordable housing for low- and moderate-income Island residents in partnership with community and an integrated network of social support organizations. The organization oversees 38 single-family homes and 88 rental units. In late 2024, VHH will put 40 new rental units on the market, greatly increasing the organization's scope.
My Role
Between January and April, 2024 I redesigned the VHH website, making it more accessible and welcoming to Vashon community members, whether they are looking for housing, curious about the organization, or interested in donating. I worked with board members and the Executive Director, Jason Johnson, to identify the key pain points.
My role primarily focused on improving site accessibility for Spanish-speaking users, website flow, website photography, and mobile functionality.
The redesigned sight reflects the rich creative essence of the Vashon community and VHH. VHH provides safe, durable, and vibrant community housing to low- and moderate-income islanders, challenging the narrative of what affordable housing looks like. My goal with the site redesign was to tell this story.
Painpoints
01.
Website accessibility to Spanish-speaking users
02.
Large blocks of text with few photos
03.
Mobile accessibility
04.
Limited and grainy photos of existing VHH properties
05.
Out-of-date organization information, board bios, and media page
Solutions
02.
-
Added photo headers to each page that showcase VHH's beautiful properties and the Island itself.
-
Broke text sections up with photos and different colored backgrounds to keep the eye moving.
03.
Completely redesigned mobile site, ensuring users can access VHH's resources regardless of whether they own a computer.
05.
Redesigned and updated every site page, focusing on building the organization's image as a community-centered organization.
Before and After

I created a page describing VHH in Spanish with the help of Jason Johnson and Patricia Banuelos, a local translator. I translated VHH's site header, designed by Jenna Riggs, into Spanish to bring the welcoming feel of VHH to Spanish-speaking islanders.
